The minimum safety or relief valve capacity required for electric boilers is determined based on the maximum power input of the boiler and the steam generation capability. The correct standard is 3-1/2 pounds of steam per hour for each kilowatt of electrical capacity. This requirement ensures that in the event of a malfunction, the safety or relief valve can adequately handle the potential pressure build-up to prevent dangerous situations, such as boiler explosions or failures due to excessive pressure.

This guideline is established by ensuring that the safety systems in place can effectively manage the output of steam under maximum load conditions. If the capacity were lower, it might not be sufficient to release the built-up pressure, thus posing a risk to the functionality and safety of the electrical boiler system.

Standards are developed based on extensive testing and consideration of worst-case scenarios, emphasizing the importance of having robust safety measures in any powered system, particularly in high-pressure environments like those found in boilers.
